Ninety participants (45 dyads), including 51 females and 39 males, with ages ranging from 17 to 33 years (M = 18.50, SD = 3.00), took part in the research. The participants were recruited through the University of Melbourne's First Year Psychology Participant Program. Participants were assigned to one of three conditions: a cooperative motivation condition (15 dyads), a competitive motivation condition (15 dyads) and a condition in which one party was cooperatively motivated and the other competitively motivated: the mixed motivation condition (15 dyads).
